It is one of the first questions people ask before installing solar: what happens when the hail comes? The short answer is that quality photovoltaic panels are designed and certified to take it.

Built and tested for impact
Tier-1 modules are tested against hail impact as part of international certification. The front glass is tempered and, in most cases, several millimetres thick. Panels are routinely certified to withstand hailstones around 25 mm hitting at roughly 80 km/h, which covers the large majority of real storms.
That does not mean nothing can ever damage a panel. Extreme, once-in-a-decade hail can. But the same storm would also damage your roof tiles, your car and your windows, and your home insurance treats a solar array as part of the building.
What actually matters
- Choose certified Tier-1 modules, not the cheapest unbranded panels
- Make sure the mounting and tilt are done properly, so panels shed impact and water
- Keep the system on your building insurance, like the rest of the roof
Done correctly, a rooftop system is one of the more durable things on your house. Hail is a reason to install well, not a reason to avoid solar.
